Description: First opened in 1966 at 91st and Metcalf, the Glenwood Arts Theatre was well known throughout Kansas City for its 43-foot-tall marquee sign featuring a flashing neon sputnik and for its huge lobby chandelier. After closing in 2000, The Fine Arts Group bought and stored many of this grand theatre’s original artifacts to integrate into the new theatre, opened in 2002, just a few blocks away in the Metcalf South Shopping Mall. This upscale theatre with elegant touches such as plush red seats, opera-house chandelier and black marble specializes in first-run art films. The Glenwood Arts was voted the best theatre in the city by The Pitch. The Fine Arts Theatre Group, a business devoted to restoring and operating vintage movie houses, is dedicated to bringing unique motion picture entertainment to discriminating patrons who prefer to view films presented in classic theatres--where the show starts on the sidewalk out front.
